Ninety-five years ago one of the most tragic incidents in the history of hard rock mining occurred here in Jackson. On Sunday, August 27, 1922 at 11:40 p.m. a sequence of events started with a fire near the 3,000 foot level of the Argonaut Mine, trapping forty-seven miners under nearly a mile of earth and rock. The rescue attempt went on for twenty-two days and ended on the evening of Monday, September 18. You can now relive the events as they unfolded day by day with KVGC reporter Cedric Clute. Listen to Cedric’s reports from the mine site and from around Jackson and Amador County, with KVGC’s special edition of Tales of the Mother Lode, Monday through Friday at 9am and 3pm.
